Kurbits — Alison Aune

Rooster and Kurbit inspired folk paintings are all acrylic on canvas, 10” x 20,” from 2019–2020.

Tuppamålning, rooster painting, was a folk art motif that depicted the ever-alert rooster; The stylized rooster paintings functioned as symbolic designs of protection. Dalecarlia or Dalmålning is also known as kurbits painting or Dala painting. This folk painting style flourished in Sweden in the 18th and 19th centuries. The kurbit was a fantastical gourd plant commonly used in folk paintings in Dalarna Sweden as a symbol of good luck.
